Nine Mile Smile (then Midnight Detour) started in a storage room in the back of a roofing business in Wyoming, Michigan during the Winter of 2006. The building had dirt floors, no heat or air but the rent was free! The idea was to gather a group of local musicians with lots of experience, play some dive bars and have some fun.

After hours and hours of practice, Midnight Detour pulled together 45 cover songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s and finally played in public for the first time - a free show in August 2006 at Z's Bar in downtown Grand Rapids. Word spread quickly and soon Midnight Detour was being invited to play all over the state of Michigan.

In December 2008, life caught up with all but two founding members. Because Rex and Kurtis were having too much fun to quit, a search was on to find new musicians to fill out the band. After a name change from Midnight Detour to Nine Mile Smile and a fresh group of supporting musicians, they updated the set list and focused on playing more corporate events, casinos and weddings. This "reset" was just what the band needed to prove that the newly revamped band was just as good - if not better - than the old.

Nine Mile Smile has been making huge strides to be better and bigger than ever. The last several years have been an amazing journey for every band member as Nine Mile Smile continues to exemplify what a solid, talented and professional band can be with a little tenacity, hard work and a common vision. We've grown from our local Grand Rapids roots to become one of the most sought after acts in West Michigan with invitations to perform from Northern Michigan to South Florida.
